Plastic recycling using artificial intelligence

Berlin, 28 October 2022

  • New AI application center launched to optimize plastic packaging sustainability.

To circuits for #plastic wrap 51 partners participate in closing #Trade, #Science and #Company on the new AI application center. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the measure aims to improve the sustainability of plastic packaging throughout the value chain in two innovation laboratories. The German Packaging Institute (DVI) is a project partner in the innovation lab K3I Cycling, which for the first time makes it possible to connect all stakeholders along the value chain through a new, open and standardizable AI interface.

Packaging makes up by far the largest share of plastic waste worldwide. However, due to the technical and economic challenges, which are often too great, only a small part of the plastic gets back into the cycle as a secondary raw material. This is where the “AI Application Hub Plastic Packaging – Sustainable Circular Economy through Artificial Intelligence” wants to start.

Hub uses methods #Artificial #Intelligence (AI) to improve the sustainability of plastic packaging throughout the value chain from design to recycling – paving the way for a sustainable circular economy of plastic packaging.

#Optimize plastic packaging recycling with AI

In order to close the cycle of plastic packaging as much as possible, 51 partners from business, science and society joined forces in the new AI application center. An important goal of the joint work is the exchange of data between laboratories, so that it is possible to view the findings across the entire value chain.

One of the central interests of the project is to make the center’s topics related to artificial intelligence and the circular economy for plastics accessible to the general public. Various events and communication measures are planned, including a podcast and an Open Day.

Two innovation laboratories

The central part of the hub are two innovation laboratories KI Opti Pack for the design and production of plastic packaging and K3I Cycling for their material recycling. Launched on September 1, 2022, both labs will run until August 31, 2025.

K3I Cycling

The German Packaging Institute is a project partner of the innovation laboratory K3I Cycling. The goal of K3I Cycling is a significant quantitative and qualitative improvement of the mechanical recycling of consumer plastic packaging waste.
To this end, K3I Cycling uses an artificial neural twin to develop a new, open and standardizable AI interface for cross-industry gathering of relevant information in terms of lightweight product packaging. The new AI interface makes it possible for the first time to digitally connect all stakeholders in the value chain.

An artificial neural twin is a fully differentiable representation of the overall system, which enables the optimization of individual components in relation to the overall system. For this purpose, sensory information of all kinds along the material flow is recorded as data.

The K3I Cycling Innovation Lab is coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS).

AI Opti Pack

the aim of the AI #opt #Package is to provide, validate and apply practical AI-powered tools for successful product design and production of quality-oriented, high-recycled plastic packaging in the AI application and data space. Coupled with this is the creation of a central network platform for value engineering.

The project and the tools developed in it cover the entire value chain from secondary raw materials, material and packaging development, process design, packaging production to waste collection and treatment.

The coordinator of the KI Opti Pack innovation laboratory is the Institute for Plastics Processing at RWTH Aachen University.
